A 35-year-old man was arrested for attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed his 2-year-old son on Saturday, say police.
The incident happened at the Ipic Play adventure park in Durbanville.
“Upon arrival at the crime scene at a local shopping centre, (police) found a male who was beyond control and who sustained self-inflicted injuries with a knife, threatening to stab the police members,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi.
“The members took action and disarmed the 35-year-old man. He was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Reports suggested that a toddler who also sustained injuries was also transported to a hospital for medical treatment.”
He said the man was under police guard.
In a statement on Facebook, the adventure park said the incident had happened in a private baby changing room.
“The family entered the facility together. No adult can enter the Ipic Play facility without a child. We experienced no erratic behaviour from any of our visitors over the weekend. Both the son and dad are stable. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.”
The emergency service provider, Titanium Securitas, said in a statement that a vehicle had stopped next to one of their ambulances at a petrol station.
“The medical crew immediately noticed something was wrong. As they approached the vehicle, they noticed a mother was covered in blood holding her lifeless child who had life-threatening stab wounds to the neck.”
The child had been taken to Durbanville Mediclinic.
“According to information on the scene, the father stabbed his own young child before turning the knife on himself,” the company said.
