Three choirs will unite to perform Johannes Brahms’s A German Requiem on Saturday April 12 at the Uitsig DRC in Ridgeworth, Bellville, at 7.30pm.
The Con Spirito Philharmonic, conducted by Sjoerd Alkema; the Cape Town Chamber Choir, under the direction of Antoinette Huyssen; and the Tygerberg City Choir, led by Peter Roux will present the work, which distinguishes itself from traditional requiems by using the Lutheran Bible, rather than the Latin text typically associated with the Requiem Mass. Brahms personally compiled the text, likely driven by the profound grief of losing his mother and the death of his mentor, Robert Schumann, which inspired the work’s completion in 1868.
With Dr Alkema conducting, the concert features soloists soprano Huyssen and baritone Conroy Scott.
Tickets cost R210 or R170 for students and pensioners through Webtickets or Allmusic at 021 981 5551. Email conspiritochoircpt@gmail.com or am@allmusic.co.za for more information.
Baritone Conroy Scott will perform at the concert.
