Vergelegen Wine Estate is once again embracing the bright and cheerful spirit of sunflowers as its one-hectare field bursts into bloom, heralding the arrival of the highly anticipated annual Sunflower Celebration. This vibrant display, which runs until mid-February (weather permitting), invites visitors to soak in the warm energy of these striking yellow flowers that symbolize positivity and vitality.
For those eager to take a piece of the beauty home, freshly picked sunflowers are sold in the Wine Tasting Room at R150 for five stems. A special edition rosé wine also accompanies the bouquet, with a portion of the proceeds supporting the estate’s honey bee research and bee projects.
Adding to the sunflower theme, Vergelegen’s Stables restaurant offers a small, exclusive menu of sunflower- and honey-inspired dishes alongside its regular fare. Pastry chef Tarquin Wagemaker has also whipped up sunflower-inspired cakes at the Rose Terrace Tea Room, perfect for those with a sweet tooth.
Visitors looking for a unique gift can grab a jar of farm honey at R155 each or receive a packet of sunflower seeds at the Potting Shed Gift Shop. The estate’s sunflower field, nestled near the Stables restaurant, has become a popular spot for selfies, offering a chance to capture memories in front of the blooms.
With the sunflowers expected to last for about three weeks, Vergelegen encourages fans to arrive early, as bouquets and sunflower-themed products sell out quickly. Stocks of seeds and products are limited, so don’t miss out on this limited-time celebration!
Open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Vergelegen charges an entrance fee of R20 for adults and R10 for pensioners and scholars, with pensioners gaining free access on Mondays. Enjoy the beauty of the sunflowers, delicious treats, and warm hospitality before the season ends.
