DA retains Ward 14

The DA’s new Ward 14 councillor, Karien Maré, says she has big shoes to fill after holding on to her late husband’s ward.

The by-election, sparked by Roelof Maré’s death in May, was held at the Kuils River Rugby Club hall on Wednesday.

Ward 14 covers Jagtershof, Austinville, Blackheath, Cedardale, Clairwood, Mikro Park, Penhill, Eersterivier, Gaylee, Greenfield, St Dumas and Zevendal.

The ANC, Democratic Independent Party, EFF, ACDP, and African Independent Congress also fielded candidates, but the DA scored 91.4% of the 3242 counted votes.

Ms Maré thanked her new constituents for showing confidence in her.

Denvir Hendricks from the ANC got 445 votes, Fredrico Hendricks from the ACDP 261, Mzimasi Sokhaheleleka from the EFF 117, Kenneth Brookes from the Democratic Independent Party 37, and Babalwa Magadla from the African Independent Congress 14.

On Wednesday, those waiting to cast their votes told the Northern News that safety and security was a priority.

Hazel Davids Ruiters, from Jagtershof, said the new councillor should be visible, transparent and accessible.

“There is a need for more schools and recreational spaces in this area,” she said.

Nicoleze Van Wyk wanted the councillor to keep parks and pavements clean, and potholes should be fixed.

Ms Maré said was already looking into those issues. She said she had worked alongside her husband for many years.

“My expectation from the community is to report all issues and complaints to the City of Cape Town. It is my duty to follow-up and make sure all issues are resolved,” she said.

Next week residents could expect to see her in their communities, distributing business cards flyers, she said.
