A 25-year-old taxi owner was shot and killed on Friday April 30 in Wallacedene.
Kraaifontein taxi owner Sbusiso “Sbu” Jezile, 25, was shot dead at a car wash in Maroela Street in Wallacedene on Friday April 30, in the 26th known taxi-related killing this year.
Detectives from the taxi-related cases unit are investigating the killing.
On Saturday May 1, the Northern News spoke to two sources who knew Mr Jezile.
“He was waiting at the car wash and was just about to begin his weekend when he was shot down. He’d just bought beer to wait for his taxi to be washed. He was friendly with everyone,” said one of the sources.
The killing comes amid a war over taxi routes. Last month, announcing the death of taxi boss Victor Wiwi, the then MEC for transport and public works, Bonginkosi Madikizela, said Mr Wiwi, who was gunned down in Nyanga on Wednesday April 7, was the 25th taxi-related killing this year.
In 2017, Kraaifontein and Bellville taxi owners butted heads in a bloody war that saw the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association, the Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (Codeta) and the provincial government set up an ongoing arbitration process to intervene.
Kraaifontein police spokesman Captain Hein Hendricks said police were investigating the killing.
He said Mr Jezile had been killed while sitting at a car wash when an unknown number of assailants walked up to him and shot him. He died on the scene.
Captain Hendricks said no arrests had been made and he confirmed that provincial detectives from the taxi-related cases unit were on the case.
Provincial transport and public works spokesperson Jandre Bakker did not respond to questions at the time of publication.
Captain Hendricks urged anyone with information to contact call 08600 10111.
