Reddam House Durbanville pupils Victor Vermeulen and Laura Brink will pursue their studies overseas after achieving an above-90% aggregate for their A-Level exams.
Two Reddam House Durbanville pupils, Laura Brink and Victor Vermeulen, are looking forward to pursuing their studies at overseas universities.
Laura achieved a 93% aggregate while Victor scored 95% in their A-Level exams. Cambridge International announced the results on Thursday August 11, said school spokeswoman Vanessa Naude.
“Laura, who last year achieved the coveted position of Top in the World for AS-Levels in language and literature in English, has been accepted to study English literature at Oxford University in the UK,“ she said.
Victor will study applied physics at Eindhoven University in the Netherlands and hopes to return after his degree with a real solution for Eskom and the energy crisis.
“Laura achieved 95% for art and design, 94% for literature in English, and 90% for history, her three chosen A-Level subjects. Victor achieved 96% in mathematics, 95% in physics, and 93% in chemistry,” she said.
Previously, Northern News reported that Laura and Victor were among 20 pupils from Durbanville Reddam House’s Class of 2021who scored averages over 80% for their AS-level results in the Cambridge International exams, (“A aggregates abound at Durbanville Reddam House”, Northern News, January 2022).
Upon receiving his results, Victor said: "I’m very satisfied and very relieved. It’s taken a lot of sacrifices to get through the significant workload of science in five months and I’ve had to put my life on hold preparing for these exams every single day.“
Laura said: “Although the workload was huge, I love my subjects, and academics mean so much to me. Initially, I was very excited about the prestige of Oxford University but the more I’ve researched, I’ve realised that the reason I want to go there is because of the way they teach.”
When asked what her study routine was as she prepared for her A Level exams, she said: “I would simply try to cover some work for each of my three subjects every day and meet my deadlines. Socialising was unfortunately of a lower priority during exam prep, so I defaulted to my lockdown habits of communicating mostly over text, with the occasional (and imperative) in-person coffee dates to unwind.”
Barry Nieuwoudt, executive head of Reddam House Durbanville, said the school was very proud of Laura and Victor.
“They took on the difficult task of choosing to accelerate their three A-Levels and complete them in five months instead of a year. These results are confirmation of the excellence of two remarkable students and encouraging students to challenge themselves to achieve their best.”
