Murders drop in Kraaifontein, Kuils River

Fifty-six people were murdered between April and June in Kraaifontein, according to the latest crime statistics.

Released by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday August 19, the statistics look at crimes reported from April 1 to the end of June.

The 56 murders are a slight decrease from the 58 in the corresponding period of 2021.

In other contact crimes, attempted murder rose 21%, from 33 to 40 cases; sexual offences dropped 22%, from 58 to 45 cases; assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm increased 11%, from 93 to 103 cases; common assaults dropped 16%, from 228 to 192 cases; and common robbery rose from 35 to 36 cases.

All told, these contact crimes dropped 6.5%, from 672 to 628 cases.

In the sexual-offences category, rapes dropped 33%, from 43 to 29 cases and sexual assaults rose 20% from 10 to12 cases.

Carjackings dropped 55%, from 20 to nine cases; robberies at residential premises dropped 6%, from 40 to 36 cases; and robberies at non-residential premises dropped 31%, from 171 to 118 cases.

Reported arson attacks dropped from six to three and malicious damage to property cases dropped 11%, from 145 to 129 cases.

Drug-related crimes were up 44%, from 482 to 695 cases. Illegal-possession-of-firearms cases were steady at 32 cases.

In Kuils River, murders dropped 50%, from 10 to five cases, but attempted murders increased from 14 to 16. Rapes were down 36%, from 11 to seven cases.

Carjackings dropped 25% from four to three. Burglaries at non-residential premises rose 59%, from 17 to 27, and those at residential premises went up 7%, from 87 to 93.

Commercial crimes increased 33%, from 45 to 60, and drug-related crimes went down 39%, from 180 to 109.

In Brackenfell, murders rose from one to two; sexual offences from eight to 11; assault cases with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm decreased from 10 to eight; and attempted murders dropped from three to two.

Burglaries at non-residential premises went down 74%, from 27 to seven, and burglaries at residential premises were down 5%, from 76 to 72.

Commercial crimes increased from 109 to 123 cases.

Premier Alan Winde said there had been an 8% drop in murder cases in hot spot precincts where the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) had been rolled. Kraaifontein is one of the precincts where additional Law Enforcement officers are deployed by the City and Province, under the plan, to support SAPS.
