A Kuils River drummy has been chosen to participate in an international competition in Croatia, but she needs to raise almost R40 000 to get there.
Robyn Jooste, 16, is part of Soneike High’s drum majorettes.
The Federation of Dance Drill, Cheerleading and Majorette Sport of South Africa has selected her for the South African squad that will participate in the World Cup of Majorette-Sport in Opatija, Croatia, in August.
Her mother, Lauren van Wyk, has started a BackaBuddy campaign and Robyn is selling meals to raise money for her trip.
Robyn has won several awards for the sport and she earned her provincial colours in 2021 and her SA colours last year. She has been part of the school’s drummies squad since February 2020 and has led it in both provincial and national competitions. At the national champs in Bloemfontein last year, it came fifth in the country.
“Robyn’s biggest dream is to perform on international grounds, and the money needed would cover her flights, accommodation, food and uniform for the duration of the competition and hopefully some pocket money to use while she is there,” Ms Van Wyk said.
“All this did not come easy for her, but it has become a coping mechanism to deal with the difficulties in life. She has been facing losing so many family members and friends due to the pandemic and losing her best friend. If she does not reach the said amount she would not be able to join the SA team.”
In a joint statement, Robyn’s school principal, Ronel Baker, and her coach, Kuda Chizema, described her as a resilient leader and said the sport was a lifeline for many girls in “marginalised communities”.
“Becoming a majorette means making friends, learning tricky athletic feats and proving themselves through a demanding rehearsal schedule. This is Robyn Jooste,” they said. “A girl that serves to become the best at whatever she touches. It can be in class or on the field, she does not settle for second best. She is a born leader and an amazing academic.”
