Crime stats: spike in murder, rape in Kraaifontein

There were 60 murders in the precinct from the beginning of October to the end of December last year, up 20% from 50 for the same period in 2021, according to crime statistics released by the Police Ministry at a press conference on Friday.

Kraaifontein police station was in the top seven in the country and the top four for the province for murders.

Rapes in Kraaifontein increased 64% from 36 to 59 cases, placing the station in the top nine in the country and top three in the province for this crime.

Nationally, there were 7555 murders for the quarter of which 3 144 were committed with guns and 2 498 were committed with knives, sharp objects and blunt instruments. During the same period, 5 935 rapes were reported in the country.

Police Minister Bheki Cele said an “intense community-centred and intelligence led-solution” was needed to address the “proliferation of firearms”.
