A Scottsdene animal-welfare organisation is appealing for donations.
DieHonnemense, a non-profit company, rescues abandoned dogs around Kraaifontein and finds homes for them.
“We uplift dogs that are surrendered if and when we can and once they are rehabilitated, sterilised, vaccinated, micro-chipped and treated for parasites, we re-home them through a very strict adoption process,” said Bianka Lerm, the director of the organisation.
They also help to provide food and parasite treatments to animals in need and educate dog owners about the importance of getting their animals sterilised and vaccinated.
Most of their outreach work is done in Scottsdene, but they also visit Wallacedene, Northpine and Scottsville.
“We have seven dogs currently in very costly private kennel facilities (in Klipheuwel) and 14 dogs in foster care that we still need to support with, among other things, vet visits, food and parasite treatments,” she said, adding that they were hampered by a lack of funds.
“We also try to provide kennels to dogs we have sterilised, and do fencing projects when possible to unchain dogs by enclosing the property.”
They relied on public donations and fund-raisers to keep going, she said.
