Police are investigating a murder case after a member of the taxi council was shot and killed outside of his home in Kuils River on Tuesday last week.

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) chairperson in the Western Cape, Mandla Hermanus, said they will ensure that the killing of their member would not result in a resurgence of taxi killings in the industry.

“Santaco has learnt with sadness of the killing of Mr Sizwe Khobocwane who was a member of Codeta (Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association) and had been part of the leadership collective in that region (Kuils River). He had also served as chairperson of the Khayelitsha/ Wynberg route and was part of Santaco Western Cape’s 90-member council.

“We would like to assure our commuters that Santaco will do everything possible to ensure that this killing does not result in resurgence of violence in the taxi industry,” he said.

Nceba Enge, the secretary of Codeta, said: “What happened is very bad. At the moment we do not have a clue but we hope that law enforcement will leave no stone unturned in getting to the bottom of this incident.”

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, confirmed that Mfuleni police arrived at the scene on Tuesday, April 4 at around 7.30pm.

“They found the body of a 55-year-old man who sustained gunshot wounds. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined. Mfuleni police are investigating a murder,” he said.
