A victim-support group will hold a free open day this weekend for victims of abuse and sexual assault who want to speak about their trauma.
The open day will take place at the Durbanville victim support room, next to Durbanville police station, on Saturday, from 9am to 5pm.
“We were looking for a way to engage with the community as people don’t always have the means to open up about the things that happened to them. So we’re we decided to use the open day as a means to focus on mental health," said Danielle Cronje, a coordinator with the Durbanville Victim Empowerment Programme.
"Although we are not councillors, we are here to listen and refer the victims to counselling services or the department of social services. We can also assist them if they need help with a protection order.
“Our main aim for the open day is to inform the community of our services and that people who experienced trauma can contact the police if they need to get in touch with us. We also welcome any professional councillors or psychologists that would like to donate their time to assist on the day, to contact us."
