Two people were arrested after a 3-year-old boy was hacked to death, allegedly by a man using an axe, in Wallacedene.
Provincial police spokesman Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said Kraaifontein police officers responded to a complaint in the early hours of Sunday April 16.
“Upon arrival in Bhunga Street, Wallacedene, at around 1am, they found the body of a 3-year-old boy who sustained fatal injuries. Police arrested and detained a 50-year-old male. Once charged he is expected to make a court appearance in the Blue Downs Magistrate court on a charge of murder,” he said
The was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel.
Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the family on Monday and told reporters that the man had allegedly attacked the child with an axe.
He said a second person had been arrested in connection with the murder.
“The family trusted this person and left their child with (him) because they were going to attend a funeral at a homestead in Eastern Cape. They were called back when this young child died at the hands of the trusted people.
“Two people are arrested here as we speak. Unfortunately, it seems to be people who are close to the child,” he said.
