A 2-year-old boy died and 14 people were displaced after the fire gutted a house and two shacks in Happy Valley, Kuils River, at the weekend.
The fire department was alerted to the fire, on the corner of Kuphumleni and Sizamile streets, at 12.3am on Saturday.
“Just after 2am, firefighters brought the blaze under control which severely damaged the house and the two structures,” said City Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Jermaine Carelse.
The child’s body was found at 1.20am under the debris.
The cause of the fire is unknown, said Mr Carelse.
Mfuleni police station spokesman Warrant Officer Neville Filander said, “The cause of the fire, which led to the death of the child is still being investigated. The whereabouts of the adult occupants during this fatal incident also forms part of the investigation. An inquest docket was opened for investigation purposes.”
A community activist Monde Njokweni appealed to the public to help the fire victims rebuild.
