A project is being launched in Wallacedene to offer free driver training to the youth in the community
The Wallacedene Youth Development Council, which is running the project with the help of the ward councillor, Siviwe Nodliwa, will be at the Wallacedene Community Hall on Thursday May 25 to accept applications.
“So many job opportunities require a driver's licence as one of the minimum requirement, therefore we sold the idea to the councillor, Siviwe Nodliwa, and he was convinced,” said the council’s chairman, Bathabile Mziwakhe.
No payments would be required as they were dealing with mostly unemployed people, he said, adding that they hoped to recruit 300 people.
The project will help the participants to obtain their learner’s licence followed by their driver’s licence.
According to Mr Nodliwa, the R300 000 in funding for the project is coming out of the ward budget.
“This driver's licence is one of those skills needed in the job market. We find it important to help young people,” he said.
Applicants must be aged 18 to 35 and reside in Ward 6. They should also be able to read and write in English and provide an ID and proof of address.
