Forty people were murdered from January to March in the precinct, down from 54 murders in the same period last year, but countrywide, murders are up by 3.4%.

Kraaifontein police station was in the top 13 in the country and the top four for the province for murders.

Northern News previously reported that there were 60 murders in the precinct from the beginning of October to the end of December last year, up 20% from 50 for the same period in 2021.

According to the latest statistics, the murder rate increased countrywide by 3.4%, from 6 083 in the first three months last year, to 6 289 in the first three months of this year.

“The majority of the killings took place in the KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Gauteng provinces with arguments, vigilantism and robberies topping the motive list for murder. The KwaZulu-Natal province also reported the highest figures of multiple-murder cases, followed by the Eastern Cape with 206 and 155 victims respectively,” said Mr Cele

He said R1.8 billion had been allocated for the procurement of police vehicles to improve police visibility.
