A Durbanville homeless shelter is appealing for donations of winter clothing and non-perishable food.

The Durbanville MES Centre of Hope is part of Mould Empower Serve (MES), a non-profit organisation that also has homeless shelters in Parow and Bellville, according to a member of the organisation Franita Knudsen.

“We currently have over 500 people who are in need of the following items: warm clothing items (small sizes, 26 – 34), sneakers, beanies, socks, underwear, blankets cleaning products, toilet paper, black bags, sugar, coffee and milk, frozen soup and bread,” she said.

The number of homeless people at the Durbanville centre varies daily.

“We get different people every day, except the ones on our programmes that attend every day. Permanent attendees are about 200. That is without the extras,” she said.
