The South African Football Association has launched a tournament programme for Kraaifontein schools.
Unveiled to teachers and coaches, among others, at CapeGate shopping centre on Thursday, the programme is meant to promote the development of sport in schools, according to Dali Fekenisi, the association’s head of department for youth and schools in Cape Town.
The tournament will take place at Aristea Primary School on Saturday August 12.
Eight schools would compete in the seven-a-side soccer tournament for both under-13 girls and boys, Mr Fekenisi said.
The Safa programme would also include a separate under-13 netball tournament for the same eight schools at the same venue and time.
The 20-minute soccer and netball matches, from 9am to 3.30pm, will follow an 8am drum-majorettes demonstration, and the school will run a market.
The winning schools will receive trophies, medals and sports kit.
A company sponsoring the tournament would then visit the winning schools to help address some of their needs, said Mr Fekenisi.
Francois Kees, a soccer coach from Petunia Primary School in Scottsville, said the programme would develop sport in schools and teach children new skills. “It’s a huge privilege and it will pave a great path for them,” he said.
