Kraaifontein police precinct has the third-highest number of rapes in the province, according to the latest crime stats.
The figures, released by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday, show Kraaifontein had 38 rape cases during the quarterly reporting period from April to June, compared to 29 cases over the same time last year.
The Harare police precinct had the highest number of rape cases in the province with 47 followed by Nyanga with 39.
Rape was down 10% in the province, from 1115 to 1002 cases, and 2.8% nationally, from 9516 to 9252 cases.
Meanwhile, murder in Kraaifontein dropped 48%, from 56 to 29 cases.
Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said in response: “The City is encouraged by a near 50% decrease in murders in Kraaifontein year-on-year… which (is a) Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) deployment area. We continue to crowd resources into crime hotspots in the top 30 stations nationally for violent crime.”
