Morningstar’s municipal pool, which is in a poor state and has been closed to the public for several years, will be ready to reopen by December following repairs, says the City.
However, the repairs will be cosmetic - enough for the pool to open for the busy festive season - and more extensive repairs will start in April next year, according to mayoral committee member for community services and health Patricia van der Ross (“Calls for Morningstar pool to be repaired and reopened,” Northern News, September 7).
“Major upgrades can only take place after the season has ended when all design and planning work has been completed,” she said.
The pool was meant to open in March, according to a City schedule, but upgrades had been stalled by the “unavailability of a suitable tender for the repair of aquatic facilities”, Ms Van der Ross said, adding that a tender was now active.
The cosmetic repairs will include remedial work in certain sections of the epoxy pool basin as well as repairs to plant-room equipment.
The major work will see cracks in the pool basin repaired, building work, improvements to the ablution facilities, better drainage for stormwater run-off and a new plant room.
Ms Van der Ross said security guards were posted at the facility while it was closed to prevent vandalism.
