Parow library celebrates 40 years in McIntyre Street

The Parow library, which started off in a small room in Old Ham Street 85 years ago, is celebrating its 40th anniversary at its current premises on the corner of McIntyre Street and 1st Avenue.

Staff filled the library with helium balloons, each carrying an interesting fact about the library, and there were displays of the library’s awards and other memorabilia.

Principal librarian Jacinta Avontuur said the month’s celebrations would end with a tea-and-cake event on Thursday September 28.

About 85 new members joined the library each month, she said.

Patrons have access to computers, free wi-fi, e-books and newspapers and other services, and non-profits use the hall for workshops and meetings.

Keanan McArthur, a volunteer from Friends of Parow Library, said the library had been a refuge for him for more than 20 years.

“I’ve been coming to the library, checking out books, and talking to the librarians. It’s been a home for so many people over the years.

“There are many people who come to the library in need of emotional support. They come to the library just to sit and talk to the librarians... it’s a safe space for us.”
