A Brackenfell teacher has made the shortlist for a million-dollar global teaching prize.
Dr Mariette Wheeler was chosen from 7000 nominations from 130 countries as one of 50 candidates in the running for the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize organised in partnership with the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) and Dubai Cares.
“It is an honour to represent my school, the Western Cape, South Africa and Africa,” she said.
The prize is worth more than R19 million at the current exchange rate.
According to the foundation, candidates are assessed on their teaching practices as well as how they innovate to deal with challenges, impact the community beyond the classroom, improve the teaching profession and help children become global citizens.
The winner will be chosen from ten finalists later this year.
Stefania Giannini, Unesco assistant director-general for education, and Sunny Varkey, founder of the Varkey Foundation, congratulated Ms Wheeler.
Mr Varkey said: “ The Global Teacher Prize was launched to highlight the importance of education in tackling the great challenges ahead – from climate change to growing inequality to sweeping changes in technology.”
