Drummies squad drumming up support

A northern-suburbs drummies squad is looking for new members.

Fourteen girls are part of the Durbanville Majorettes Club’s senior team, but more are needed to be competitive, says coach Karen Donachie.

“In 2023, we achieved so much with only 19 team members and believe that our lack of numbers is what is holding us back on achieving so much more,” she said. “The average team consists of between 20 to 30 members.”

The Durbanville Majorettes Club was started in Durbanville in 2019 and is now based at Aristea Primary School, in Kraaifontein.

Any girl from the age 13 could join the team even if they stayed outside Durbanville or Kraaifontein, Ms Donachie said.

At the national champs in Cape Town last year, the team came third in the “small drill” competition and first in the “mini non-prop” and “mini pom dance” categories.

“We do not turn anybody away. We teach the athletes everything they need to know, and they are then given the coaching and support to improve not only their skills as a majorette, but life skills and personal skills too,” Ms Donachie said.
