Training Kraaifontein pupils to be good role models

More than 100 Grade 9 pupils from three Kraaifontein schools will be selected for a peer-educator training programme that is due to start next week.
Thirty-five pupils each from Masibambane, Bloekombos and Hector Peterson secondary schools will be chosen for the programme, according to Vusumzi Mpofu, from Gold Youth Development Agency, a non-profit company that runs the programme.
The training encouraged the youngsters to be good role models who helped their peers and uplifted their communities, he said.
The agency is busy with interviews and the successful candidates will start on Monday February 5.
The peer educators will move through different phases of the programme during the course of their high school careers and will become "alumni" or "gold grads" after they matriculate.
Sinalo Bolo, who was part of the programme from 2019 to 2022, said: "The programme has taught me how to uplift my community in any way I can and recognise how my peers are suffering in things like alcohol and drug addiction, depression, low self-esteem etc. and refer them to people that can help them overcome such things.”
