A 43-year-old man, who was out on bail after being accused of stealing thousands of rand worth of cell tower back-up batteries in Kuils River and Macassar, was rearrested after he was linked to the theft of more of the batteries in Philippi, say police.

The suspect is due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Friday for a bail application in connection with the theft of batteries worth more than R50 000 and damage to essential infrastructure, according to the Hawks.

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi said 12 batteries worth more than R50 000 were stolen from MTN cell tower installations in Kuils River and Macassar in March 20 and a R3500 smart lock was damaged during one of the break-ins.

Police subsequently arrested the 43-year-old man and another suspect in Kuils River after they were allegedly found with the stolen batteries.

Both men appeared in the Somerset West Magistrate's Court and were each granted R3000 bail, but the 43-year-old suspect was then rearrested on Thursday last week, said Lieutenant Colonel Vukubi after he was linked to the theft of more MTN cellphone tower batteries - also in March 2020, but this time in Philippi.
