A man accused of raping and robbing a 21-year-old Bellville woman in an e-hailing vehicle has been arrested, say police.
The woman had called the e-hailing service to take her home from work after 9pm on Friday, said police spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie.
“She was fetched by a foreign (national) driver who instructed her to sit at the back of the hatchback vehicle,” he said.
A second suspect had then allegedly appeared from the boot and, pointing a gun at the woman, had taken her laptop, cellphone and other belongings, said Lieutenant Colonel Pojie.
“The suspect then violated the victim whereafter they dropped her on the side of the road. They also attempted to demand money from her family but were unsuccessful,” he said.
Bellville Community Police Forum chairperson Emre Uygun said the woman had been left on the roadside in the Kraaifontein area.
Another police spokesman, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, said the suspect faced rape and robbery charges and would appear in the Bellville Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
The incident comes less than two weeks after two young women were left seriously injured after a Bolt driver allegedly stabbed them in Table View.
