A lawyer is expected to appear in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, this time as the accused, after he was allegedly caught with drugs at the court.
An officer was called to assist security at the main entrance to the court on Tuesday last week where he allegedly found the lawyer "in possession of suspicious parcels", said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi.
“The police officer opened the parcels in his presence and discovered 79 sachets filled with cannabis sealed in cling-wrap plastic and 100 mandrax tablets found in his possession. The discovery was seized as evidence,” Warrant Officer Swartbooi said.
The lawyer, who had been due to represent a client at the court, was detained on a possession-of-drugs charge.
He appeared in court on Thursday last week and his case was postponed to Thursday this week for a bail application, according to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesman Eric Ntabazalila.
“He has elected to conduct his own defence... the State will oppose his bail application,” said Mr Ntabazalila.
