Soneike High School pupils will get to compete in a national heritage competition after winning the provincial round on Saturday.
A school from each of the Western Cape's eight education districts competed in the provincial championships of the Heritage Education Schools Outreach Programme competition at the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute in Kuils River, according to Nathan Newman, a school enrichment coordinator at Metro East Education District.
The competition is run by the National Heritage Council, the Department of Basic Education and the Western Cape Education Department. It is now in its second year, and this is the second time that Soneike High School has been crowned the Western Cape champion.
Participating schools receive three allocated topics from the National Heritage Council.
"They are then required to do the necessary research to compile their presentation and portfolios," Mr Newman said.
Heritage management in South Africa, heritage as part of the curriculum, and the commemoration of Heritage Day were the topics this year.
“Hats off to Soneike High School who progressed through all rounds and were rightly rewarded as champions of the Western Cape for the second year running,” Mr Newman said.
In a statement, Soneike High School said: “By participating in this initiative, our students have not only gained valuable knowledge but also developed essential skills in research, critical thinking, and collaboration.”
The national competition will take place at the Tsitsikamma National Park in the Eastern Cape from Monday September 23 to Friday September 27.
