Claremont High’s Bread Buddies project is serving sandwiches to needy pupils.
Teacher Lindile Tshetsha says the project has been going since 2013, but he and senior teacher Tasneem Kagee-Solomon took it over recently.
“We genuinely enjoyed being involved in this initiative, which is why we continue to lead it.”
The project was launched because the school did not have a formal feeding scheme.
“With a parent body eager to contribute and support in any way possible, the programme aims to ensure that no student goes hungry or spends the day without something to eat,” Mr Tshetsha said.
About 60 sandwiches, made with peanut butter, jam and French polony, are served daily to needy pupils across all grades.
“We prefer halaal toppings wherever possible. Monetary contributions are also welcome,” Mr Thetsha said.
The project usually starts in the third week of the first term.
“This allows us time to accurately determine the number of students signing up and also to sign up the new Grade 8 pupils.”
