Lentegeur crime prevention and provincial anti-gang units confiscated several illegal firearms and live rounds of ammunition in the Lentegeur police precinct on Thursday January 23 and Saturday January 25.
Joint efforts by the Lentegeur crime prevention and provincial anti-gang units, responding to the recent flare up of gang violence in the Lentegeur police precinct, have led to the arrests of six men and confiscation of drugs and three illegal firearms and ammunition.
According to Lentegeur police spokesperson Navon van Houten, police arrested two men, aged 20 and 30, on charges of possession of drugs and confiscated 804 packets and two bags of tik (methamphetamine) during a raid on a house in Selena Way, Woodlands, on Thursday January 23.
That same day, the anti-gang unit arrested a 21-year-old man and confiscated an illegal firearm and six rounds of live ammunition at a house in the precinct following a tip off, Constable Van Houten said.
“Later the evening, the anti-gang unit received information that another firearm was kept at a premises in Poppy Street, Lentegeur. They searched the property and found one firearm with 16 live rounds. A 19-year-old-male was arrested and detained at Lentegeur SAPS,” he said.
On Saturday January 25, police officers arrested a 37-year-old man in Montrose Park for possession of a fake firearm while on patrol, following complaints of shooting in the area.
“Later the same day, the anti-gang unit also responded to the shooting and searched premises in Bertha Crescent, Montrose Park, and found a 9mm firearm with six live rounds.
“A 34-year-old male was arrested,” Constable Van Houten added.
The six men were scheduled to appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on Monday January 27 on respective charges of possession of drugs and prohibited firearms and ammunition.
