A DRAMATIC early-morning police chase through the veld has resulted in the arrest of a suspected drug dealer in Bergsig, Springbok, with officers seizing drugs with an estimated street value of R60,000.
The suspect, a 34-year-old foreign national, was caught red-handed by members of the Springbok Public Order Police D-Platoon during a targeted operation on Monday.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock, officers were acting on intelligence about drug trafficking in the area when they spotted the suspect at around 4.25am, carrying a suspicious bag.
Instead of complying, the suspect made a run for it, dashing into the veld in an attempt to evade capture. Officers immediately gave chase, closing in and ultimately arresting him.
A search of the bag revealed a significant quantity of mandrax tablets and tik, along with a substantial sum of cash, believed to be the proceeds of drug sales.
The suspect now faces charges of dealing in drugs and resisting arrest and is expected to appear in the Springbok Magistrate’s Court soon.
Lieutenant-Colonel Kock stated that the Northern Cape police have reaffirmed their commitment to eliminating drugs and drug-related crime from communities, urging residents to assist by reporting illegal activities via the MySAPS app or the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
