The Durbanville/Kraaifontein Sea Scouts (DK Sea Scouts) paid a visit to the House of Grace Orphanage in Fisantekraal to bring some joy and teach the children about gardening.
Along with gardening supplies, including spades, forks, and rakes, DK Sea Scouts also brought groceries, sweets, toys and clothing for the children on Saturday March 15.
“The idea was to teach the children the valuable skills of growing and maintaining their own food garden,” said Carey-Leigh Bollaert, a committee member of DK Sea Scouts and organiser of the outreach.
Bryan Cloete, the Scout group leader, taught the older children about planting vegetables, the types of vegetables being planted and explained how to properly prepare the soil before planting.
The Scouts, Cubs, and their families worked alongside the children to plant seeds in the garden.
Afterward, they enjoyed hot dogs, cool drinks, and fun activities like playing on the jumping castle and joining a game of musical chairs, the organiser said. The orphanage is home to 22 children.
DK Sea Scouts is a community-based organisation committed to the growth and development of children through learning essential life skills and serving their community.
