A total of 78 trees have been planted along Kruskal Avenue in Bellville as part of the City’s pre-Arbor Day project.

Arbor Day encourages people to plant trees and raises awareness about the importance of trees and forests, but South Africa only celebrates Arbor Week in the first week of September annually.

The trees were planted over almost two weeks, in Bellville, from Thursday April 10 to Wednesday April 30.

Newlands Nursery supplied the trees, while the City of Cape Town's local horticultural team supported the transporting, planting and will also be responsible for overseeing maintenance.

The trees were a mixture of indigenous and hardy species well-suited to the urban environment.

“Trees not only beautify our city, but they improve the air quality and contribute to the physical and mental health of those who work and live in these areas. Initiatives like this are a great example of how we can work together to build a greener and more sustainable Cape Town,’’ said Francine Higham, mayoral committee member for community services and health.
