South African stand-up comedian David Barry Hilton will take to the stage at the auditorium of Protea Valley Church, in Bellville, on Friday May 30, in support of charity.
He is teaming up with Cape Town comedian Paul Lee for the show, Laugh Thy Neighbour: A Night of Clean Comedy with Barry Hilton and Paul Lee.
Hilton, 69, drew inspiration from comedians Richard Pryor and Billy Connolly when he was young.
Commonly referred to by his middle name, Barry (aka 'The Cousin') he became a professional comedian in 1983 at the age of 26.
His biography revealed that while working as the maintenance manager of a hotel frequented by the cast of the comedy television show Biltong and Potroast, he met Johnny Noble who managed to get him into his first gig at The Holiday Inn, in Port Elizabeth in May 1983.
According to Lee, "The idea behind Laugh Thy Neighbour was simple: let’s create a night that’s smart, hilarious, totally clean – and bring the community together while we’re at it. I wanted to do something fun, meaningful, and full of joy – with a few hundred good people, and my friend Barry Hilton on stage. That’s a good night in my book."
All proceeds of the event will go towards Renew Trust, a non-profit organisation that supports children, families and communities through mentorship, food relief, and educational programmes.
Doors will open at 7pm and there will be snacks and drinks available beforehand. The show will start at 8pm and end at about 10pm. The tickets are available for R200 through Quicket.
