Police members attached to Maitland flying squad apprehended three men in Brackenfell following a high-speed car chase on the N1 highway on Sunday, June 22.

According to police, complainants reported that three armed men entered a house in Yzerfontein, in the West Coast, on Sunday at around 9pm, where they took valuable items such as cellphones, television sets, laptops, and kitchen appliances.

They then fled the scene in the complainants’ Toyota Urban Cruiser, police said.

A broad alert was issued, and the police members later noticed the suspicious vehicle on the N1 highway and gave chase.

The driver of the car failed to stop and attempted to drive police officers off the road.

“When they approached the corners of Frans Conradie and Okavango roads in Brackenfell, the driver lost control and collided with a lamp post. The occupants resisted arrest, but the police members brought the situation under control and searched the vehicle,” said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, police spokesperson.

They detained the three men for the possession of a stolen motor vehicle, the possession of presumed stolen property, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, attempted murder, attack on police, and resisting arrest.

The suspects were expected to appear in court at the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court on the charges mentioned.
