The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is set to host a mathematics festival at its main campus in Bellville.

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), in partnership with the European Union, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), and the University of the Western Cape (UWC), will host a national conference celebrating mathematics.

The event, known as the Mega Maths Festival, will take place from Sunday, July 6 to Wednesday, July 16.

UWC spokesperson Carmel Roberts said the festival will feature over 80 poster presentations highlighting creative approaches to teaching mathematics, and is expected to benefit around 160 educators from rural and township schools.

“This festival marks a pivotal moment for maths education in South Africa, it is an opportunity to turn the tide, demystify mathematics and reignite interest in mathematics among our learners and scholars", said Dr Marcia Socikwa, the deputy director-general for university education at DHET.

The International Mathematical Union describes mathematics as an effective tool for building mental discipline, promoting logical reasoning and mental rigour.

It also plays a vital role in understanding other school subjects such as science, social studies, music, and art.

UWC's vice-chancellor, Professor Robert Balfour, said that mathematics is one of the key factors for economic growth.

Professor Ulrich Paquet, the director of AIMS South Africa, said: “It is exciting to see the Mega Maths festival bring the mathematics community together in a very strategic way.”
