A 34-year-old woman was killed and six other occupants were left injured after a Hyundai ix35 veered off the road and rolled in Kraaifontein, police said.
The accident happened on the N1, outbound between Brighton Road and the Joostenbergvlakte turn-off, on Saturday, June 28, before 4am.
Kraaifontein police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Louise Strydom said the deceased was a passenger in the car, and police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
Meanwhile, Brackenfell station commander Colonel Jakobus Marthinus confirmed that another accident also occurred on Saturday, June 28, just before 6am near Old Paarl Road and Brackenfell Boulevard. A truck and a taxi collided, but the taxi driver fled the scene.
No arrests were made, and no injuries were reported, he said.
The Western Cape mobility department recently raised concerns about the road statistics recorded on the province’s roads between Tuesday, April 29, and Sunday, May 4.
There were 16 fatal crashes and 267 speeding offences recorded across the province.
“Many of these incidents are due to human error and a disregard for rules that are intended to protect us all. We each have the power to help prevent crashes and save lives,” said spokesperson Muneera Allie.
