A 22-year-old woman was taken to hospital after being hit by a taxi in Parow on Tuesday morning, police said.

She was crossing Giel Basson Drive at the intersection with Milton Road in Churchill Estate at around 6:45 am on Tuesday, July 8.

“Preliminary information suggests that a 22-year-old woman was hit by a Toyota  Quantum minibus. She was transported to hospital by ambulance in a serious condition. No one was arrested,” said police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie.

Parow police registered a reckless and negligent driving case for investigation.

Lieutenant Colonel Pojie said the docket would be submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority once the investigation is complete, to determine whether prosecution is warranted.

This incident came almost six weeks after the driver of a vehicle lost control and collided with a tree on Saturday May 31, at around 2am in the  Francie can Zijl Street, in Parow.

“A male, aged 22, was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel while five others were injured and transported to a nearby hospital. It was later established that one of the victims, a female aged 17, who was injured, succumbed to her injuries,” police spokesperson, Anelisiwe Manyana, told Northern News at the time.

However, the Western Cape Mobility Department reported on Wednesday, July 9, that twenty-three people lost their lives in crashes on provincial roads between Monday, June 30, and Sunday, July 6.

These fatalities included 15 pedestrians, four drivers, three passengers, and one motorcyclist.

“Most alarming is the 57 people arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol during a week marked by heavy rain across the province. Driving while under the influence, no matter how small the amount, will not be tolerated,” said Western Cape Mobility MEC, Isaac Sileku.
