The Durbanville Community Day Centre (CDC) officially opened a room on Friday, June 27 that aims to serve the needs of young people.

The room, known as Youth Zone or Adolescent and Youth Friendly Services (AYFS), was designed to provide a non-judgmental environment for the specific needs of youth aged from 10 to 24.

“Young people often fear seeking healthcare because of judgement, especially around sexual or mental health issues. This Youth Zone is our way of making youth feel comfortable in educating themselves about their health,” said Liesel Rose, facility manager at Durbanville CDC.

The Department of Health and Wellness said the Youth Zone will offer a wide range of essential services such as sexual and reproductive health education, family planning, management and treatment of chronic conditions such as HIV and TB, mental health support, counselling, routine medical check-ups, and care for minor ailments.

The Youth Zone operates every Tuesday and Thursday from noon until 2pm.
