Mandela Day through the lens: Scenes from the northern suburbs

On Mandela Day, Friday July 18, 1 080 adults and children gathered at the Market Hall in GrandWest, to devote 67 minutes of their time to pack meals in honour of the late president Nelson Mandela.

The adult volunteers, which included staff from Rise Against Hunger (RAH) a non-profit  GrandWest and other corporate businesses worked alongside 42 learners and three educators from Elswood, Bellville South and Rocklands High Schools.

Over the course of just under five hours the group packed 114 boxes, equivalent to 240 624 individual meals which will feed more than 1 046 children per year through school feeding schemes.

The Dogbox Project and Capegate Shopping Centre held its Mandela Day initiative on Saturday, July 19 from 10am until noon in the shopping centre. Participants painted wooden kennels, sponsored by local businesses, which will be donated to under-resourced animal shelters across the Western Cape. The DogBox Project began in 2012 as a Mandela Day initiative to bring people together for 67 minutes to paint 67 kennels as a tribute to Nelson Mandela.

The NoStop charity’s music group entertains the Kraaifontein community, while the organisation accepts sanitary towel and food donations and serves meals to residents and children on Friday, July 18.

Elvaresia Cloete, founder of LoveThyNeighbour non-profit organisation speaking outside Irista Primary School in Sarepta. The LoveThyNeighbour celebrated the Mandela Day on Friday, July 18. The activities started in the morning with a fun run from Sarepta Sports Ground to Irista primary, where the rest of the activities were held. These activities included children playing soccer, netball games and meals served for the attendees.

Latifah Jacobs, the founder of Aurorah Kuils River Community Action Network (CAN) speaking on their Mandela Day activities in Sunbird Park, Kuils River on Friday. Ms Jacobs served food to the children, while other activities included blood pressure screenings and police officers educating children and community members about police work and public rights.

The Durbanville Seniors' Hub members spent 67 minutes in celebration of Mandela's Day by making 396 sandwiches from 40 loaves of bread which was donated to Mould Empower Serve (MES), a non-profit organisation for homeless people.
