Kuils River’s local community group, Highbury Foundation, is set to host its fourth annual five-a-side soccer tournament on Women’s Day, Saturday, August 9, at the Sarepta Sports Ground.
Teams can consist of a maximum of seven players, and gender mixed teams are allowed.
“We hope to increase the number of girls-only teams, which will then play in their own group. Matches will be played on the netball courts, thus players must wear takkies only,” said Winston Middleton, one of the organisers.
Teams can register in these age groups: 12 to 13 years, 14 to 18, and over 18 from 8am on the day of the tournament, before matches start at 9am.
Coaches can also email or WhatsApp their team list beforehand. The first six teams in each category will secure their spot.
The duration of matches is 10 minutes. No gate or registration fees will be charged, as there will be preparations for football matches on the sports field.
William Newman, another organiser said: “We will partner with the African Renaissance and Diaspora Network’s Red Card campaign aimed at eradicating all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls. The Red Cards will act as a constant reminder of the plight of girls and women in our country.”
The organisers said sponsorship of vouchers for the winning teams, cool drinks and sandwiches will be appreciated.
