The City of Cape Town unveiled a synthetic soccer pitch at the Fisantekraal Sport Ground on Tuesday, September 16.

Unlike traditional grass fields, synthetic pitches can withstand heavy use and remain playable throughout the year, even during periods of water scarcity.

To maintain the facility's longevity, the City advised community members to adhere to the booking system.

Completed more than 18 months, the project included a full-size synthetic soccer pitch in accordance with the PSL National Soccer League Handbook, as the City said in a statement.

The pitch forms part of the broader Fisantekraal Recreation Hub, which supports seven netball clubs, with junior tournaments planned during school holidays, according to the City’s statement.

“I am calling on every resident to work with us to care for this facility by using the booking system so we can prevent overuse, pick up litter, report vandalism, and keep it safe for future generations,” said Francine Higham, the mayoral committee member for community services and health.

The Fisantekraal Recreation Hub offers a range of programmes for the community, including after-school activities, girls' futsal, netball, rugby, fitness, and seniors' activities.

“To our local football clubs – this is your home ground. May it be where talent is discovered, where discipline and teamwork are strengthened, and where our young people are inspired to dream bigger and achieve more.

“To the community of Fisantekraal – this pitch belongs to you. Let us protect it, cherish it, and make it a lasting source of pride for generations to come,” said Francois Berry, the local ward councillor.

Lizelle Kameri, the chairperson of Kasi Lions Football Club, said: "We welcome the new synthetic pitch at the Fisantekraal Sports Ground. It is not only a valuable asset for local players, but for the entire community.

"The upgraded facility brings new energy and opportunity to the area, making the sport more accessible and enjoyable for all. We recently hosted a tournament on the new pitch and it was a fantastic experience."
