In Touch Athletic Club, of Kuils River, will hold its annual Charity Trail Run/Walk at the Zevenwacht Wine Estate on Sunday, November 2, and on Sunday, December 7.

All the proceeds from the events will go towards purchasing a specialised wheelchair for 12-year-old Mason van Dyk, from Bellville, who lives with a rare skin disease called Harlequin Ichthyosis (HI).

He was once again hospitalized earlier this year and spent about two months in the hospital as a result of contracting a severe infection that spread to his bloodstream and bones, according to his mother, Lisa Biscombe.

After a long time spent in bed, Mason’s Achilles tendons have shortened in both legs, Ms Biscombe said, "Which makes it hard for him to walk; he can manage short distances."

Because of his sensitive skin and unique medical needs, a suitable wheelchair for Mason starts at around R60 000, she said. This will help him on the painful days when walking has become too difficult for him.

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the fundraiser being held in support of my son, Mason. Your kindness, effort, and willingness to stand beside our family during this time mean more than words can fully express.

“Every day comes with its own challenges, but your compassion reminds us that we are not alone. Knowing that there are people who care - who are willing to give their time, resources, and hearts - gives us renewed strength and hope,” Ms Biscombe said.

For the fundraising trail run event, there will be 15km, 10km, and 5km distances for the adults. Parents can also join the 3km Moms and Tots Fun Walk.

Entry fees for adults include R200 for the 15km run, R170 for the 10km, and R140 for 5km. The fees for Moms and Tots cost R70, which includes up to two children under the age of five, and the same amount applies for children aged seven to 17 years for the 5km distance.
