Durbanville police are investigating attempted murder cases after five men aged between 24 and 31 were shot and wounded in Fisantekraal on Sunday night, November 9.
Provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, said the incident occurred at around 8:20pm at the corner of Dulah Omar and Yolandi Du Preez Streets.
“Police members responded to a complaint of a shooting at the mentioned address, and upon arrival, on the scene, the victims were already taken to medical facilities in private vehicles.
“According to reports, the victims were standing on the corner when a blue Toyota Tazz drove up to them and opened fire, wounding the victims before fleeing the scene.”
Sergeant Twigg added that the circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation, and arrests are yet to be made.
Local ward councillor Francois Berry expressed concerns regarding gun violence in the area, stating that the incident had caused anxiety.
“The emotional and social impact on the broader community is devastating. It’s unacceptable that residents once again have to live in fear because of senseless violence. Even some of our social network partners have had to suspend crucial services today, leaving residents without essential support. It’s a fragile situation, and restoring peace and confidence must be the immediate priority,” he said.
Councillor Berry also said there is a “worrying increase” in violent incidents related to gang activities and the availability of illegal firearms in Fisantekraal.
He said some of his interventions include collaborating with interest groups to invest in youth development, education, and social programmes.
