The streets of Scottsville, Kraaifontein, came alive on Friday, December 5, as residents joined a World AIDS Day commemoration and walkathon hosted by the Red Ribbon Foundation in partnership with Harmonie Clinic.
World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1, is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about HIV/AIDS, promoting prevention, and supporting accessible health education.
Community members, clinic staff, and local organisations gathered early for the symbolic walk, which started on Frans Conradie Drive, moved through the neighbourhood, and ended at the Harmonie Clinic parking area in Kraaifontein.
Along the route, volunteers distributed condoms to motorists and later held educational discussions on topics such as the influence of substance use on sexual behaviour and the importance of treatment adherence.
A candle-lighting ceremony offered a moment of reflection as attendees honoured loved ones lost to AIDS-related illnesses. The programme also featured cultural performances by the Xclusive dance group and the Scottsville Drum Majorettes.
Red Ribbon Foundation director Dorian Basson said the attendance was an indication of the community’s commitment to reducing stigma and strengthening public understanding of HIV.
"This event was a powerful reminder that community leadership is at the heart of the HIV response," he said.
Mr Basson also marked 20 years of living with HIV this month.
Sister Sharon Nadioo, who works with the HIV and TB patients at the Harmonie Clinic, said: "The turnout was a testament to our community's strength and resilience. By sharing our stories and coming together, we break the stigma and reinforce our collective commitment to equitable health access for all."
The programme also featured cultural performances by the Xclusive dance group and the Scottsville Drum Majorettes.
