Residents of Scottsville in Kraaifontein were treated to an unexpected burst of colour, music and celebration on Monday, January 5, when the legendary Cape Town Coons brought their Tweede Nuwe Jaar spirit to the area.

Drawn by the sound of drums and trumpets echoing through the streets, community members poured out of their homes, many unsure of what was happening.

Glittering costumes, feathers and big band instruments transformed the neighbourhood into a moving celebration of Cape Town’s rich cultural heritage.

The visit formed part of the second leg of the Coons’ annual Tweede Nuwe Jaar parade and was made possible after Member of the Provincial Legislature Donita Stephens reached out to one of the group’s directors, bringing the iconic spectacle directly to the community.

"Not only were we surprised, but in awe too, when realising that the legendary Cape Town Coons are in our town," said Warrant Officer Louise Strydom, Kraaifontein police station's social crime prevention coordinator.
