Police have made a breakthrough in the investigation into a burglary at the offices of Badisa Tygerberg, with a 40-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident.
The suspect was arrested on Wednesday, January 14, following a break-in at the organisation’s offices earlier this month, during which seven laptops were stolen, police confirmed.
Police spokesperson, Captain F.C. van Wyk, said the suspect was expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Friday, January 16.
When asked whether any of the stolen laptops had been recovered and returned to the organisation, Captain van Wyk said: “The investigation continues.”
Badisa Tygerberg previously said the stolen laptops were essential tools used by social workers to compile reports, maintain case files, and apply for placements for children in need. The theft was expected to significantly affect the organisation’s daily operations.
In a Facebook post, Badisa said the arrest followed a tip-off from a concerned community member.
“We are extremely grateful for this individual’s support and willingness to come forward. This act of cooperation highlights the strength of community partnerships and plays an important role in helping us protect the services we provide to vulnerable children and families,” the organisation said.
The Parow Community Police Forum (CPF) welcomed the arrest.
CPF chairperson Bronwin Daniels said: “The CPF remains committed to working closely with police, community stakeholders, and organisations such as Badisa to promote safety and support services that are vital to vulnerable children and families."
