A Parow Valley family is battling to come to terms with the untimely passing of their youngest son, who was robbed of his future during the early hours of Saturday morning while with friends.
Egan Sampson, 24, was with his friends when he was gunned down in Denton Street, Ravensmead, at around 2am on Saturday, January 31.
His mother said she is unable to speak as her ‘heart is in pieces’.
According to the heartbroken father, James Sampson, the ordeal began at 6am when he saw that Egan had not returned home from his night out.
After failing to get in touch with him on his phone, Mr Sampson said he got a call from one of Egan’s friends.
The father explained, “I went to the house of the people who were looking for me. There, his friend took me to the guy he was with.
“When we got there, they told me he was shot in the leg and when they went back to look for him, he was gone. They only found some blood on the ground.”
Mr Sampson says that from there he went to Tygerberg Hospital, where his worst fears were realised.
He said: “I had to identify his body because he came in as an unknown. He was shot in the head.
“Information is a bit sketchy. Apparently, he was shot in the leg and fell down and couldn’t get away and that was when they did what they did. I think he was shot four or five times.
Mr Sampson said his son was robbed of his future, as Egan had plans to complete his studies in motor mechanics.
He added: “He was working and wanted to complete his studies in motor mechanics. He was looking forward to the future.
“He was fun to be around, jokey, friendly, helpful and always looked out for others.
“When we announced the news of what happened, we had 30 to 40 of his peers coming to our house and they are still coming.
“It is not easy for the family. It is heavy; we have our moments and breakdowns. He was the youngest of four, which makes it even more devastating.”
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that a murder case was registered for investigation with no arrests made as yet.
