While Valentine’s Day is often marked with flowers, cards and romantic gestures, at Durbanville Children’s Home, the focus is firmly on ensuring that every one of the 144 children in its care feels loved.

This February, the home has launched its Hearts for Hope campaign, calling on the public to help make the day special for the children through donations of small but meaningful items that offer comfort, joy, and a sense of belonging.

The campaign is collecting sweets and chocolates, Valentine’s-themed socks, cosy pyjamas, and essential toiletry items such as deodorant, body lotion, soap, and Vaseline for the girls and boys, ages 2-18 years, who benefit from the home's services.

"The campaign began on the 2nd of February and is progressing well; however, we are nowhere close to our target of collecting 144 of each item in need," said Kyla Barford, the marketing, events, and community engagement officer at the home.

While simple, the home believes that these items are crucial in helping children feel cared for on a day that celebrates connection and affection.

Ms Barford said the initiative is about creating moments of warmth and inclusion for children who may not otherwise experience Valentine’s Day in the same way as their peers.

"We are also in need of lunchboxes and water bottles for the children to take to school," she said.

Community members who wish to support the campaign can drop off donations at the home’s reception at 1 Church Street, Durbanville, on or before Friday, February 13.

The home is also encouraging residents to share information about the campaign within their networks to help spread the message and maximise support.
