Cape Town will play host to one of Africa’s largest international chess tournaments when the Moja Chess Extravaganza 2026 takes place at the Bellville Velodrome from April 25 to 30.
The six-day event is expected to attract hundreds of players from South Africa and abroad, including Grandmasters and International Masters competing in FIDE-rated sections.
Organisers anticipate participation to grow to around 1 000 players in 2026, up from nearly 700 competitors who took part in last year’s tournament.
Founded by chess development organisation Moja Chess Solutions, the extravaganza has grown into a flagship event on the Southern African chess calendar. The tournament aims to provide African players with access to high-level international competition without the financial burden of travelling overseas.
The 2026 edition will feature a range of playing sections, including categories for elite players, women, juniors, seniors aged 50 and above, and developing competitors. Games will be broadcast live globally using electronic boards, allowing spectators around the world to follow matches in real time.
Two new elements will be introduced in 2026: a dedicated seniors section and special prizes recognising players with disabilities.
Moja Chess Solutions founder Dr Jabulani Mokoena described the move to Cape Town as a significant milestone for the tournament.
“Cape Town provides the perfect international stage for African chess. Our goal is not only to host a tournament, but to build a movement that creates opportunities, inspires young minds, and places Africa firmly on the global chess map.”
Organisers also pointed to the educational benefits of chess, including improved concentration, decision-making skills, and academic performance.
In addition to its sporting impact, the event is expected to contribute to Cape Town’s tourism and hospitality sectors.
